Story of  Traffic (2016 film)

"Traffic" (2016) is a Hindi-language thriller drama film directed by Rajesh Pillai, which is a remake of the 2011 Malayalam film of the same name. The movie is inspired by a real-life incident that took place in Chennai in 2009, where a heart was transported across cities in record time to save a patient’s life. The film revolves around a critical organ transport mission that brings together several characters, each with their personal challenges. Here’s a detailed plot breakdown:

Plot Summary:

The story is set in Mumbai and Pune, following multiple characters who are brought together by a life-or-death mission.

1. Introduction to Characters:

  • Rehan Ali (Vishal Singh): A young journalist, excited about his new job, sets off to meet his friend on the morning of his first day. Tragically, he is involved in a car accident and slips into a coma, suffering brain damage.
  • Dev Kapoor (Prosenjit Chatterjee): A superstar actor based in Mumbai. His daughter, Riya Kapoor (Kitu Gidwani), suffers from a serious heart condition and is in urgent need of a heart transplant to survive.
  • Dr. Abel Fernandes (Parambrata Chatterjee): A renowned doctor in Mumbai, responsible for overseeing Riya's condition and her eventual surgery if a donor heart is found.
  • Sudeep (Manoj Bajpayee): A police constable who has been suspended for corruption and is emotionally devastated by the fallout from the incident. He is introduced as a man struggling to rebuild his life.
  • Godbole (Sachin Khedekar): The Joint Commissioner of Traffic in Mumbai. He plays a key role in organizing the logistics of the operation.

2. The Core Conflict:

Riya Kapoor’s condition worsens, and doctors suggest that a heart transplant is her only hope. Meanwhile, Rehan’s family is informed that he is brain-dead, and they are asked to consider donating his organs. Initially reluctant, his parents are convinced to donate Rehan's heart to Riya, given the gravity of her condition.

However, there's a major logistical challenge: Riya is in a hospital in Mumbai, while Rehan’s body is at a hospital in Pune, 150 km away. The heart needs to be transported within a very tight time frame—within 2 hours—for the transplant to be successful.

3. The Mission:

A highly coordinated effort is required to transport the heart from Pune to Mumbai by road, as flying it isn’t possible due to weather conditions. The police and medical team decide to create a "green corridor"—a special route cleared of traffic for the ambulance to travel at high speed.

Sudeep, the suspended cop, is chosen as the driver of the ambulance. He is reluctant at first, due to his personal issues and tarnished reputation, but eventually agrees, seeing it as an opportunity for redemption.

4. The Journey:

The core of the film focuses on the race against time. Sudeep drives the ambulance carrying Rehan's heart, accompanied by Dr. Abel and another officer. The journey becomes increasingly tense as they face several challenges along the way:

  • Traffic jams and unexpected blockades that slow them down.
  • A stormy downpour that complicates the drive.
  • Emotional moments between the characters in the ambulance, as they reflect on their personal struggles and the weight of the mission.

While the mission seems straightforward, the tension escalates with obstacles, including a group of politicians who create a roadblock for their own convoy. The police must negotiate and ensure the ambulance has an uninterrupted path.

5. Parallel Emotional Arcs:

Throughout the journey, the film switches between the events in the ambulance and the waiting families:

  • Riya’s family anxiously waits at the hospital, hoping that the heart will arrive on time.
  • Rehan’s parents, especially his mother, wrestle with their grief and the decision to donate his heart, realizing that Rehan’s death could bring life to someone else.
  • Sudeep’s personal redemption unfolds as he reflects on the mistakes of his past and the chance he now has to do something meaningful.
  • Dr. Abel struggles with the pressure of ensuring the heart arrives safely and Riya survives.

6. Climax:

As the journey nears its end, there are moments of extreme suspense when it seems like they might not make it in time. The ambulance encounters a last-minute traffic jam, and Sudeep’s driving skills are put to the test as he pushes forward, risking his life and the lives of those in the ambulance.

They manage to overcome the obstacles, and the heart arrives at the Mumbai hospital just in time for the transplant to begin.

7. Resolution:

The heart transplant is successful, and Riya is saved. The film ends on a poignant note, with the emotional closure of all characters:

  • Rehan’s parents find peace, knowing that their son’s heart saved a life.
  • Sudeep is redeemed in the eyes of his colleagues and himself.
  • Dev Kapoor is relieved, though emotionally overwhelmed, at having his daughter back.

Themes:

  • Selflessness and sacrifice: Rehan’s parents making the difficult decision to donate his heart, saving another life amidst their grief.
  • Redemption: Sudeep’s journey as a disgraced cop who gets a second chance to prove his worth.
  • Time and urgency: The film’s tension revolves around the race against time to transport the heart.
  • Human resilience: The film explores how people can come together for a common cause, overcoming personal and external obstacles.

Critical Reception:

The film received praise for its gripping narrative and strong performances, especially by Manoj Bajpayee and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The direction of Rajesh Pillai was also appreciated for its realistic portrayal of a tense, time-sensitive mission. However, some critics noted that the emotional subplots occasionally slowed down the pace of the thriller.
